metallurgy

Ever wondered what a Material Scientist does all day in the labs? No?

Above are a collection of random microstructures of different metals. The black and white images are SEM images. The most famous of which is a picture of an ant eating a micro chip. I am pretty sure that the ant died as the sample is plated with gold to improve conductivity. Ants have rights too! That however, is another story.

The colour pictures represent metals tested either for hardness or undergone heat treatment, placed in resin then subsequently polished. Polishing is the bane of every budding metallurgist. The samples were then etched in acid e.g HF.

Unfortunately I have no TEM images to show you. Thats not necessarily a bad thing. They just look like black and white dots!
